| Leonard was born
in The Pas, Manitoba but his family is originally from Pukatawagen, Manitoba
(Mathias Colomb Cree Nation).
He became aware of art at a very young age as his father was a wildlife artist. As he grew older he found that Native art always captured his interest. "I began to understand that there was a lot of meaning in the symbolism of Native art". In the art he saw a sense of harmony and respect for life and by realizing the universal concepts of Native art he became part of that circle. By observing nature, sketching and viewing other artists works he developed various ways of painting and drawing, in either abstract, surreal or realistic styles. In many of his works he uses the sun and the stars (light) to symbolize life, consciousness, the Grandfathers and the spirit. He feels that the essence of being a visual artist is being able to comprehend and direct information into images. Understanding that there are endless ways to express the self in images is a vital force in the mind and the heart of an artist. His goal is for his artwork to be appreciated by people who have a sense of respect for and are building a relationship with nature. |
