Georges Braque - Le Jour

Cubism

In 1906 the noted Post-Impressionist Paul Cezanne died and in his wake a retrospective exhibition of his work was held and the publication by Emile Bernard of a famous letter written by Cezanne took place. In this letter Cezanne wrote of treating nature in terms of cylinder, sphere and cone, enabling young painters for the first time to recognize Cezanne's principal intentions. Some young artists, most notably the Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso began to expound on these theories and the Cubist movement was born. The Cubists invented a new type of pictorial space. This new type of space was based on the principle of basic, simplified forms and a shifting point of view.

The Cubists presented an object as if it was being seen from different angles at the same time. Since the concept of reality became separated from that of appearance the resemblance of form to that of ordinary vision became unimportant. The Cubists claimed in the New York Times on the occasion of the landmark 1913 Armory show that they "are making insanity pay".  Their new way of looking at the world would forever change the art world.
