| The movement emerged
to some extent as a reaction to the teachings of the academies and their
control of the arts. Their belief was that painting should return to the
naturalistic and unaffected approach found in the work of artists active
during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Their subject matter was
drawn from the Bible or medieval poetry and imitated both the style and
the form of the art from those times.
Although not direct members of the Pre - Raphaleite Brotherhood many artists were heavily influenced by the group and the Romantic movement which began in France. Artists such as Lord Frederic Leightom, Alma - Tadema, John Godward and John William Waterhouse are now linked to the term Pre - Raphaelite and many of these artists are the names that first come to mind when one thinks of this movement. |
